Diamond-coated carbide cutting tools are great for machining highly abrasive materials as coatings significantly increase tool life. However, thick film coatings make cutting edges dull, and thin coatings often wear prematurely.
Rollomatic’s process to sharpen thick-film diamond-coated cutting tools addresses that challenge. The Rollomatic CNC LaserSmart 510 laser cutting machine probes the surface of the coated cutting edge to detect exact shape and position. Then, laser cutting removes just enough diamond coating to make the cutting edge sharp.
Field tests demonstrate significant increases in tool life with a sharpened, thick-film coated tool compared to a conventional diamond-coated cutting tool, making such cutting tools a cost-effective alternative to polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools.
